Tinder is introducing Face Check, a new facial recognition system to verify that new users are real people. Users will take a short selfie video, which is matched against their profile picture. Verified users receive a badge, and the video is deleted after keeping only two screenshots for record-keeping.
Currently, Face Check is required only for users in California. The feature is designed to prevent bots, spoofed accounts, and duplicate profiles, and it does not rely on government IDs like Tinder’s ID verification system. Tests in Colombia and Canada have shown promising results.
According to Tinder, this update is part of its ongoing efforts to create a safer, more authentic experience. California was chosen for its size, demographics, and strong privacy and online safety laws.
